A good logo does two things: it communicates what a business is about and it works at any size, in any colour and in any context. Most cheap logos fail the second test. They look fine on a white background at full size and fall apart on a dark background, as a favicon or embroidered on a uniform.

Our logo design service is £500 for three distinct concepts with two rounds of revisions. You receive every file format you will ever need and full ownership of the work. No stock icons, no template generators.

Worked Example

Three logos, tested the way a logo actually gets used

Most logos get shown once, large, on a white slide. That is not where they have to survive. Put each mark on white, on black, on a brand colour and over photography, then drag the size down to a 16 pixel favicon and see what holds together.

These are the three marks we drew for SearchSoda Arcade, our own browser games. They are the real supplied files, shown at real sizes, rather than a mockup of them.

LOGO DESIGN IN DEPTH

What makes a logo work and what common logo mistakes cost businesses significantly more than the original design

A logo has four jobs: to be recognisable, to be memorable, to work across every context it will appear in and to communicate something appropriate about the business it represents. A logo that does these four things does not need to be complex or clever. The most recognisable logos in the world are almost universally simple: a tick, an apple, a pair of arches. Complexity is not sophistication. Clarity is sophistication.

The most common logo mistake that costs businesses money is not the logo itself but the file formats and variants delivered with it. A logo that only exists as a PNG file cannot be used at large scale without quality loss. A logo that only works on a white background cannot be used on dark backgrounds, merchandise or coloured packaging. A logo without a monochrome version cannot be used in black and white contexts. A logo without a stacked (vertical) variant alongside a horizontal variant cannot be used in square or portrait formats. Discovering these limitations when you need to produce signage or branded merchandise, months or years after the original design, typically requires paying for additional design work that should have been included from the start.

Font choice is as important as the mark itself for most logos. A wordmark-only logo, where the business name is set in a distinctive and appropriate typeface, can be as recognisable and effective as a pictorial logo or combination mark. The typeface communicates personality: a serif font conveys tradition, heritage and authority; a geometric sans-serif conveys modernity and precision; a script communicates approachability and creativity. The font choice should reflect the actual personality of the business rather than the designer's aesthetic preference.

Colour choices in a logo carry significant psychological weight and have practical implications. Every logo should have a monochrome version because not every application will support colour. The primary brand colour should be specified precisely in HEX, RGB, CMYK and Pantone to ensure colour consistency across digital and print applications. A colour that looks vibrant on screen may look dull in print, and a colour that looks professional in Pantone will look different in process CMYK if the specifications are not managed carefully.

We work in Bloomsbury, central London, and take on projects anywhere in the UK. Every project starts with a brand discovery session that establishes the values, personality and positioning the visual identity has to carry. Every project delivers multiple concept directions, multiple revision rounds and a complete file pack in every format needed for professional use.
